“First hint that body’s ‘biological age’ can be reversed,” cried the headline of Nature.com, an online science-based article site. In a small trial, the drugs appeared to rejuvenate the body’s ‘epigenetic clock’, which tracks a person’s biological age, he said.
According to the Nature.com report, a small clinical study in California has suggested for the first time that it may be possible to reverse the body’s epigenetic clock, which measures a person’s biological age. By testing blood samples from said clinical trial designed to reverse aspects of human aging, scientists discovered a significant reversal in their epigenetic age.

What was the TRIIM test experience?

  1. The study was titled “Thymus Regeneration, Insulin Immunization and Attenuation” or TRIIM test.
  2. The TRIIM trial tested 9 white men between the ages of 51 and 65.
  3. First, the researchers decided which 9 people to choose from among the many healthy volunteers.
  4. Then the chosen ones were given a cocktail of three common drugs – growth hormone and two diabetes drugs.
  5. The results suggest that, on average, each of them lost 2.5 years of their biological age.
  6. These results were obtained by measuring and analyzing the marks on a person’s genomes.
  7. The participants’ immune systems also showed signs of rejuvenation.
  8. The TRIIM study was performed in 2019 and led by immunologist Gregory Fahy, scientific director and co-founder of Intervene Immune in Los Angeles.
  9. The trial was approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration in May 2015.
  10. It started a few months later at Stanford Medical Center in Palo Alto, California.

Thymus on the radar:

According to the Nature.com report, the results came as a surprise even to the trial organizers, but the researchers caution that the results are preliminary because the trial was small and did not include a control arm.
“I expected to see the clock slow down, but not reverse,” says geneticist Steve Horvath of the University of California, Los Angeles, who conducted the epigenetic analysis. “It was a bit futuristic.” The results were published Sept. 5 in Aging Cell.

“There may be an effect,” says cell biologist Wolfgang Wagner from the University of Aachen in Germany. “But the results are not strong because the study is very small and poorly controlled.”

The latest trial was designed primarily to test whether growth hormone could be used safely in humans to restore thymus gland tissue. The gland, which sits in the chest between the lungs and the sternum, is crucial for effective immune function.

What the thymus gland does:

White blood cells are produced in the bone marrow and then mature inside the thymus, where they become specialized T cells that help the body fight infections and cancers. Simply put, a type of lymphocyte that develops in the thymus, T cells are essential for human immunity. As we age, the thymus gland begins to shrink after puberty and becomes increasingly clogged with fat.

The epigenetic clock is an age predictor based on DNA methylation levels. It depends on the body’s epigenome, which is a complete description of all chemical modifications, such as methyl groups, that mark DNA and histone proteins.

The pattern of these tags changes throughout a person’s life and follows their biological age, which does not necessarily coincide with their chronological age.

According to the researchers, more studies need to be done on immunosenescence.

Evidence from animal studies and some human studies shows that growth hormone stimulates regeneration of the thymus. But this hormone can also promote diabetes, which is why the trial included two widely used anti-diabetic drugs, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and metformin, in the treatment cocktail.

Foods that boost thymus gland function and immunity:

  1. Garlic: Garlic contains allicin which may have antibacterial, antiseptic, antifungal and antibiotic effects. It is also said to protect against atherosclerosis and stroke due to its ability to prevent platelets from sticking together. Garlic can also help lower high blood pressure and cholesterol. Pumpkin seeds: The edible, flat, green seeds extracted from the flesh of a pumpkin can be rinsed and roasted, plain or with other flavors such as oils and spices, to create a delicious crunchy snack. While there are many good uses for pumpkin seeds, some listed by BBC Good Food are beneficial for bladder health, heart health, sleep regimen, blood sugar balance, blood pressure, and more. It is also enriched with antioxidants. “Pumpkin seeds are an excellent source of zinc,” Nina Omotoso, nutritional therapist at Revital, tells Marie Claire. “Zinc is one of the most important minerals for boosting the immune system and supports the function of the thymus gland, which controls the entire immune system. It also increases the production and activity of infection-fighting white blood cells and has direct antiviral properties.

Cocoa: Marie Claire quotes Nina Omotoso who says, “Eating a few cocoa beans a day could boost your immune system,” says Nina Omotoso. “But while a chocolate bar may look tempting, it won’t provide the same benefits – there’s less cocoa and too much sugar. It is better to stick to the raw bean. It is rich in flavonols, a type of antioxidant that can boost the immune system.

What “not to do” or what to “give up” to age in better health?

Aging is inevitable. But eliminate boredom, stress, poor health, and regret from the process. Go easy on the sugar if you can’t completely ditch the artificial option. Sugar can actually depress immune activity, so avoid all forms of sugar if you’re fighting an infection. Stop smoking. It is actually the number one enemy of a long, healthy life.
