The Zydus ZyCov-D vaccine was the first COVID-19 vaccine – the fifth vaccine overall – to be approved in India for children. The vaccine was available for adolescents aged 15 to 18, from January 3, 2022.
Unlike other vaccines, ZyCov-D is needle-free. It is injected using a needleless applicator called a PharmaJet which uses a narrow jet of liquid to penetrate the skin and deliver the jab.
It is also a plasmid – a type of DNA found mainly in bacteria – that provides the spike protein of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and elicits an immune response mediated by the cellular and humoral arms of the human immune system.
“The plasmid DNA platform also allows for the rapid generation of new constructs to deal with mutations in the virus, such as those that are already occurring,” Cadila Healthcare, the vaccine’s maker, told the government in August 2021.
Age range: 12-18
Corbevax is the first locally developed COVID-19 protein subunit vaccine in India, which includes parts of a virus that stimulate an immune system.
“CORBEVAX is a ‘recombinant protein subunit’ vaccine, developed from a component of the spike protein on the surface of the virus, which helps the body mount the immune response against the virus,” Biological explained. E Limited, the manufacturer of the vaccine. .
The vaccine was developed by Biological E Limited in collaboration with the Texas Children’s Hospital Center for Vaccine Development (Texas Children’s CVD) and Baylor College of Medicine (Baylor) in Houston, Texas.
