An Australian doctor has listed the many positive changes she noticed after she stopped drinking for a month.

Dr Deb Cohen-Jones, a GP from Perth, Western Australia, abstained from alcohol in April after noticing it had become a stress coping mechanism.

After four weeks of sobriety, she woke up early feeling refreshed, had less cravings for fatty foods and was more likely to exercise in the morning.

Dr. Cohen-Jones also noticed a drastic decrease in feelings of anxiety and felt more in control overall.

Sharing her experience on Instagram, she admitted that two weeks of the month involved self-isolating at home due to being sick with Covid, which made things a little easier.

“Interestingly, I had absolutely no urge to drink at any time at home, especially when I wasn’t feeling well… I just don’t drink at home so I don’t even think about it. not,” she wrote.

“The few times we went out for a meal or with friends, I felt a little ‘fomo’ (outcast) at first, but that quickly settled down and I found I was enjoying and savoring it more my food.”

The most noticeable changes happened in the morning and she also felt less bloated after eating.

What to expect when you stop drinking

Within 12 to 24 hours: Detoxification begins and blood sugar normalizes.

During this time, you may experience withdrawal symptoms, including sweating, anxiety, depression, and insomnia.

In a week: Sleep quality should improve and you should start feeling more energized and hydrated.

In two weeks: Weight loss can begin with the removal of hidden calories in alcohol.

Within three to four weeks: Blood pressure stabilizes.

“Since the end of the month, I think twice before having a drink and limit myself to two drinks if I do,” she wrote.

“I really believe the month off was a great opportunity to reset and plan to do it several times a year.”

Doctors say abstaining from drinking alcohol for as little as a month improves concentration and decision-making, while reducing the risk of mental health problems, including anxiety and depression.

Revealed: The long-term effects of regular heavy drinking

Brain: Drinking too much can affect your concentration, judgment, mood, and memory. This increases your risk of having a stroke and developing dementia.

Heart: Excessive alcohol consumption raises your blood pressure and can lead to heart damage and heart attacks.

Liver: Drinking three to four standard drinks a day increases your risk of developing liver cancer. Long-term heavy drinking also puts you at increased risk of liver cirrhosis (scarring) and death.

Stomach: Drinking even one to two standard drinks a day increases your risk of stomach and bowel cancer, as well as stomach ulcers.

Fertility: Regular heavy alcohol consumption reduces testosterone levels, sperm count and male fertility. For women, drinking too much can affect their period.
