Forbes named the University of Utah Health one of the Best Diversity Employers for 2022. Forbes partnered with market research firm Statista to survey 50,000 Americans who work for companies of at least 1,000 employees and identify companies they have identified as most committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
University of Utah Health ranks 41st out of 500 recognized organizations nationwide, down from 98and in 2021. U of U Health is also the only healthcare provider in the state of Utah to receive the designation.
“We are honored to be recognized for this significant achievement and to see positive movement from last year,” said Sarah Sherer, director of human resources at the University of Utah Health. “We are committed to listening, learning and ensuring that we critically examine how we can continue to improve and provide fair treatment to our colleagues, patients and community. We recognize that we still have work ahead of us and strive to ensure that our infrastructure and culture fosters a place of belonging, acceptance, growth, opportunity and above all respect.
Employees who responded to the survey gave their thoughts on a range of statements regarding age, gender equality, ethnicity, disability, LGBTQ+ and general diversity about their employer. Respondents also considered diversity among senior executives, evaluations of employees at other companies, positions responsible for diversity, and communicating a diverse company culture.
U of U Health was also recognized by Forbes in 2021 as a “Top Employer” and more recently recognized by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation as the best place to work for LGBTQ+ people.
“We know that to provide the highest quality care to all, we must value a diverse workplace, with people from diverse backgrounds and lived experiences who can contribute to the most comprehensive care for our patients,” said José Rodríguez, vice president associate for health equity, diversity and inclusion at the University of Utah Health. “Even with this recognition, we know that we have employees from underrepresented backgrounds who still do not feel seen or heard, and we will never stop our work until everyone in our organization feels valued. “, added Rodríguez.
